📋 How this calculator works

Sources: 2026 Medicare Part B premium ($185 standard), CMS-published Medigap rate ranges by state cluster, Part D 2026 average ($50/mo with $2,000 OOP cap), Medicare Advantage CMS data showing $0 typical plan premium with weighted-average copay/MOOP estimates by utilization tier.

What it shows: Total annual cost = Part B ($185 × 12 = $2,220) + plan-specific premium + average expected out-of-pocket given your utilization tier.

5-year projection: Assumes 5% annual Medigap rate increase, 3% Part B increase, MA OOP unchanged. Real rate increases vary by carrier — the calculator uses an industry baseline.

Limits: This is a budgeting estimate. Actual carrier-specific quotes vary within the ranges shown. For binding quotes, call 256-800-4885 and we'll quote every Medigap and MA carrier in your ZIP code, free.

What the calculator misses

Three factors that move your real cost more than the calculator can capture:

Your specific carriers in your ZIP

Cheapest Plan G in Phoenix isn't the cheapest in Tucson. Your ZIP matters more than your state. We compare every carrier in your actual ZIP.

Carrier rate-increase history

Some carriers undercut on year-1 then raise rates 12% annually. We use a 5% industry baseline — your specific carrier may be higher or lower. We track each carrier's actual history.

Your specific prescriptions

Part D plan choice depends on your specific drugs and pharmacies. We run your prescription list against every Part D plan in your ZIP for actual cost.

Calculator FAQ

How accurate is the Medigap calculator?+
The calculator uses 2026 actuarial averages from carrier filings and Medicare.gov data — Plan G premium ranges of $110-$200/month for 65-year-old non-smokers, scaled by state, age, gender, and tobacco status. Actual quotes vary by carrier within those ranges. We recommend the calculator output as a budgeting estimate, then call 256-800-4885 for binding carrier-specific quotes (free).
Why is Plan G more expensive than Plan N?+
Plan G covers Part B excess charges and has no office or ER copays — Plan N has a $20 office copay and $50 ER copay. The premium difference is roughly $30/month. If you have fewer than ~13 doctor visits a year and don't live in a state with frequent excess-billing physicians, Plan N saves money long term.
Why is Medicare Advantage cheaper monthly?+
Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private HMO/PPO plan that's funded partially by the federal government — that's why monthly premiums are often $0 beyond your Part B premium. The trade-off is network restrictions, prior authorization, and an annual out-of-pocket maximum of up to $8,850. If you stay healthy and use little care, MA wins on total cost. If you have chronic conditions or use a lot of care, Medigap usually wins.
How fast do Medigap rates increase?+
Most carriers raise Medigap rates 3-7% per year. Some smaller carriers undercut on year-1 then increase 10%+ annually — so the cheapest carrier today isn't always the cheapest after 5 years. The calculator's 5-year projection assumes a 5% annual increase as a baseline. We recommend asking any carrier for their published rate-increase history before enrolling.
Can I get a binding quote from this calculator?+
No — the calculator gives a budgeting estimate. A binding quote requires actual underwriting with a specific carrier. Call 256-800-4885 to get carrier-specific quotes from every Medigap company in your ZIP code, free.
