Kaiser Permanente Medicare Review 2026

Integrated managed care — Kaiser is simultaneously the insurance plan, the hospital system, and the physician group. Available in 8 states + DC (CA, CO, GA, HI, MD, OR, VA, WA). Among the highest CMS Star Rated MA plans nationally. Best for current Kaiser members aging into Medicare; new members must accept switching to Kaiser-affiliated providers.

Quick verdict

Best for: people who already use Kaiser for their pre-Medicare healthcare and want to continue with the same doctors, hospitals, and integrated EHR after age 65. Also strong for new Medicare beneficiaries living in Kaiser-served markets who value high CMS Star Ratings, coordinated care, and bundled benefits over provider choice.

Not for: beneficiaries who don't currently use Kaiser and have established relationships with non-Kaiser providers. Switching to Kaiser MA means changing your primary care doctor, specialists, and likely your hospital. Also not an option for residents of the 42 states Kaiser doesn't serve.

Strengths

  • Highest CMS Star Ratings — most Kaiser MA contracts are 4-5 stars.
  • Integrated delivery model — insurer, hospitals, and physicians are one organization.
  • Strong care coordination via shared EHR across all Kaiser providers.
  • Competitive premiums — most plans $0-$60/month.
  • Bundled benefits — Part D, dental, vision, hearing typically included.
  • High member satisfaction scores.

Watchouts

  • Closed HMO network — must use Kaiser-affiliated providers (limited exceptions).
  • Available in only 8 states + DC.
  • Switching means changing all your doctors if you don't already use Kaiser.
  • No Medigap option — Kaiser only sells MA, not Medicare Supplement.
  • Cross-state travel coverage is limited (emergency care only).
